Lecture by Daniel Jütte (NYU, SFB-Mercator Fellow)
In his lecture, Professor Daniel Jütte (New York University), currently a Mercator Fellow at CRC 1369 Cultures of Vigilance, will present his research for a book project on urban mobility and vigilance in the early modern period. His focus is particularly on the spread of carriages and other four-wheeled vehicles in European cities from the 16th century onwards, as well as the massive economic, social, cultural and gender-specific implications of this development. These new forms of urban and social mobility were accompanied not least by new practices of urban vigilance, which, however, remained in tension throughout the entire period with the manifold conflicts arising from the transformation of urban transport and everyday life.
